The term "TMJ Disorders" refers to a number of muscle, joint,
and nerve symptoms that are caused by an irritation of the temporomandibular
joint. The temporomandibular joint on each side of your face
is what attaches your mandible (lower jaw) to your skull. These
two joints combine with other muscles, ligaments, discs and
bones to create a complex system that allows a full range of
movement and activity, such as chewing, swallowing, talking,
or yawning. If your jaw is not properly positioned, a function
as simple as opening your mouth can seem difficult or painful.
TMJ syndrome is more commonly referred to as lockjaw or jaw
popping. Symptoms of
TMJ
problems include:
- Clicking, popping or grating sounds when opening or closing
the mouth
- Pain or difficulty in opening your mouth
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Pressure builds up behind your eyes
- Tenderness of the jaw
- Your jaw gets stuck or lock
- Soreness in the neck or upper back area
- Earaches
Imagine being able to return to the normal routine of family
life and business relationships independent of debilitating
discomfort and pain medications, or even that annoying click.
During your visit to our Los Angeles area facility, we even
ask you to imagine what life would be like being free from TMJ
discomfort.
At his Orange County practice, Dr. Henry uses sophisticated
computerized EMG (electromyography of the jaw muscle), TMJ sonography,
and magnetic jaw tracking equipment, to identify the ideal bite
position of your jaw.
