TMJ

TMJ The term "TMJ Disorders" refers to a number of muscle, joint, and nerve symptoms that are caused by an irritation of the temporomandibular joint. The temporomandibular joint on each side of your face is what attaches your mandible (lower jaw) to your skull. These two joints combine with other muscles, ligaments, discs and bones to create a complex system that allows a full range of movement and activity, such as chewing, swallowing, talking, or yawning. If your jaw is not properly positioned, a function as simple as opening your mouth can seem difficult or painful. This is a common symptom of TMJ. Temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ) is more commonly referred to as lockjaw or jaw popping. However, for those suffering from TMJ pain and discomfort, there's hope.

At the Orange Center for Cosmetic Dentistry, TMJ disorders are treated through neuromuscular dentistry, a procedure focusing on the muscles that move your jaw. Neuromuscular dentistry utilizes the relaxed position of the muscles of the head and neck to place your jaw in its optimal position. At our practice, we provide neuromuscular tests to determine if your jaw is in its optimal position. If it is not, you may be a candidate for neuromuscular dentistry.
